Tribos de São Miguel

Urban art, local memory and community participation in São Miguel Paulista.

Tribos de São Miguel brought together urban art, education and local memory to restore a deteriorated wall approximately 1 km long in São Miguel Paulista and then create a graffiti mural depicting the neighborhood’s history. Over two months, artists and community members revisited stories, identities and figures that shaped the neighborhood, transforming the wall into a visual narrative accessible to everyone in the city.

The initiative also reached two schools, offering theoretical and practical graffiti workshops and creating a mural at each school. Discussions, dance, music, rap battles and other forms of urban culture expanded the dialogue with students and residents.

Carried out during the pandemic, the project adapted its activities to the health protocols in place and included a tribute to professionals working in Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS). The result combines scale, artistic quality, community participation and recognition of São Miguel Paulista’s history and collective memory.
